With thousands of baby skincare products on the market it can be hard to know which products to use on baby’s delicate skin. Some do more harm than good and can cause eczema and rashes.

Maintaining healthy and nourished skin is crucial for babies. Their delicate skin is prone to dryness and rashes.
After using several products on a daily basis for my newborn, I found the top three baby skincare products that worked for my sweety: Aquaphor, A+D, and Desitin. They are highly effective in preventing dry skin and rashes.
I try to avoid products with a lot of unnecessary chemicals and fragrances. I keep it as simple as possible and stick to the basic, raw ingredients when it comes to baby products.
Extra unnecessary ingredients can cause more skin irritation if your baby has sensitive skin or allergies. It might make the baby’s skin dryer or aggregate the rash. Cautiously test out every new product to see if baby’s skin reacts well.

genetics
Genetics can play a role in a baby’s predisposition to dry skin. If parents or other family members have a history of dry skin conditions, such as eczema or atopic dermatitis, there’s a higher likelihood that the baby might inherit these tendencies.
Genetic factors can influence the skin’s ability to retain moisture and maintain a healthy barrier function.
Clothing
The type of clothing a baby wears can also impact their skin. Rough or tight clothing made from certain fabrics can rub against the skin and contribute to irritation and dryness.
Hydration and Diet
Babies who are not adequately hydrated may experience dry skin. Ensuring that your baby is receiving enough fluids, especially during hot weather or if they’re breastfeeding, can help maintain skin hydration. Additionally, a balanced diet that includes essential nutrients, such as healthy fats, can support overall skin health.
hot baths or Frequent cleansing
Bathing your baby in water that’s too hot or using harsh soaps can strip their delicate skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness. Hot water can break down the skin’s lipid barrier, which is responsible for retaining moisture. It’s recommended to use lukewarm water for baby baths and to avoid over-bathing, as excessive bathing can also contribute to dryness.
Babies have delicate skin that can be sensitive to frequent cleansing with soaps and wipes. Over-cleansing can disrupt the skin’s natural protective barrier and contribute to dryness. It’s important to choose gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and to avoid excessive wiping.
weather
External environmental factors, such as weather conditions, can significantly impact a baby’s skin. Cold and dry weather can strip the skin of moisture, causing it to become dry, flaky, and sometimes even cracked. Similarly, exposure to wind and low humidity levels can exacerbate dryness in a baby’s sensitive skin.
Low humidity levels, which are common during the winter months and in arid climates, can lead to dry skin. Dry air can draw moisture away from the skin, causing it to become parched and irritated. Using a humidifier in your baby’s room can help maintain a more comfortable level of moisture in the air.
Certain products/ ingredients
Some babies may have allergies or sensitivities to certain substances, including ingredients in skincare products or laundry detergents. These allergens or irritants can trigger dryness and skin discomfort.
How to prevent baby’s dry skin?
Limit baths
For the first couple of weeks, newborns don’t really need a soak bath. Their skin is delicate and still getting used to the environment and everything around them. To keep the natural oils and vernix caseosa intact, limit soak baths during the first post natal weeks. The vernix caseosa is a white, creamy biofilm that covers the fetus during the last trimester. After birth, it protects the baby’s skin and provides extra uterine adaption of the skin.
For the first couple weeks, and months really, baby’s are clean. When I brought my newborn home, I would only wipe his bottom with a soft, wet wash cloth to take off access urine and poop. If I took him outside, I would gently wipe his face. Since they are fully clothed and don’t touch anything, there is no need to use soap.
No Baby Soap or Use Gentle Soaps
I did not start using baby bath soap until around 3 months. I started of mainly using it around his bottom and to wipe under his neck rolls where spit up and sweat would sit during the day. If soap is not needed, try to avoid it. You don’t want to wash away baby’s natural oils.
The chemicals in the soap dry out the skin and are unnecessary for a baby since they are relatively clean at this age. If you would like to use soap for baby to smell good, use a dime size amount to mix it in the bath water.
Using gentle baby skincare products and avoiding harsh soaps can help maintain their skin’s natural moisture.
How can I treat my baby’s dry skin naturally?
Use coconut oil
Coconut oil is a natural remedy often used to treat dry skin. When I was a baby, my grandma used to massage me with coconut oil and then rinse it off. I’ve done the same for my son in the first couple months.
Its richness in fatty acids, such as lauric acid, makes it an effective moisturizer by creating a protective barrier that prevents moisture loss from the skin.
Additionally, coconut oil’s anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe irritated skin and reduce redness and itching. It’s generally safe for babies due to its gentle nature and lack of harsh additives. However, it’s crucial to perform a patch test, opt for high-quality virgin coconut oil, and use it in moderation to avoid potential skin irritation or clogged pores.
Consulting a pediatrician is advisable if dry skin persists or if there are concerns about skin health.
It’s important to keep in mind that individual responses can vary, so what works for one baby might not work the same for another. Prioritizing your baby’s comfort, safety, and seeking professional advice when necessary will guide you in making the best choices for your baby’s skincare.
What coconut oil to use?
- Opt for high-quality, organic, virgin coconut oil that doesn’t contain additives or fragrances.
- While coconut oil is generally safe, using too much might increase the risk of clogged pores or cause skin irritation. Use it in moderation and apply a thin layer
Stay away from lotions
Baby’s, especially newborns, typically don’t need lotion unless they have specific skin concerns. The ingredients can irritate their skin and cause a rash or allergic reaction.
If the baby’s skin is dry, choose a mild, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic baby lotion and apply sparingly. Babies don’t usually need lotion applied daily; occasional use when their skin seems dry is sufficient.
The climate and environment also influence their skin needs – in dry or cold climates, a gentle baby lotion may offer moisture to prevent dry skin. To avoid irritation, opt for lotions specifically formulated for babies, devoid of fragrances, dyes, and harsh chemicals.
Acknowledging the uniqueness of each baby and seeking professional guidance for skin health concerns is essential.

Can you use Vaseline for baby Dry Skin and rashes?
While Vaseline is a common household product, it is not recommended for treating rashes in babies, particularly diaper rash.
Vaseline is primarily a moisturizing agent and lacks the necessary protective qualities required for rash prevention. It does not create a barrier against moisture, and instead, it can trap moisture and bacteria against the skin, exacerbating the rash and delaying healing.

Best products to treat baby rash:
1. Aquaphor: Superior Protection and Moisturization
Aquaphor is a popular choice among parents and pediatricians due to its exceptional protective and moisturizing properties. This product is formulated with a unique blend of ingredients that create a barrier on the skin, locking in moisture and preventing dryness.
Its rich emollients help soothe and heal irritated skin, reducing the likelihood of rashes. Aquaphor is particularly effective for diaper rash, eczema, and chapped skin.
2. A+D: Trusted Defense Against Dryness and Irritation
A+D is a trusted brand that offers a range of skincare products designed specifically for babies. Their products are renowned for their ability to prevent and treat dry skin and rashes. A+D ointment, in particular, is a go-to choice for many parents as it provides a protective layer on the skin, guarding against moisture loss and irritation. The combination of vitamins A and D in this ointment promotes healthy skin and accelerates the healing process.
3. Desitin: Reliable Diaper Rash Relief
When it comes to preventing and treating diaper rash, Desitin works each and every time. Its active ingredient, zinc oxide, forms a protective barrier on the baby’s skin, shielding it from moisture and irritants present in diapers. This helps to treat existing rashes fast and prevent new ones from forming. Desitin comes in various formulations, including rapid relief cream and maximum strength paste, depending on the diaper rash severity.
Furthermore, one significant concern with Vaseline is the risk of ingestion. Babies have a tendency to put their hands and objects into their mouths, and if they ingest Vaseline, it can cause potential harm. Ingesting large quantities of Vaseline can lead to gastrointestinal issues and may require medical attention. Therefore, it is crucial to keep Vaseline out of reach and opt for more suitable products for baby skincare.
Choose wisely when it comes to baby’s skin
When it comes to preventing dry skin and rashes in babies, selecting the right skincare products is vital. The skin is an organ and absorbs a decent amount of topical products.
Aquaphor, A+D, and Desitin are three trusted brands that offer effective solutions for maintaining healthy baby skin. These products provide protection, moisture, and relief from common skin issues. On the other hand, it is important to exercise caution with Vaseline, as it lacks the necessary protective properties for rashes and can pose risks if ingested.
By choosing the appropriate skincare products, parents can keep their baby’s skin soft, smooth, and rash-free.
